Suicide Prevention Community of Practice

Injury Prevention & Safety, Info for Health Professionals

Suicide is complex, with many stakeholders involved in the delivery of prevention-related activities across Alberta. The Alberta Suicide Prevention Community of Practice formed in 2013 to facilitate collaboration and coordination between communities across the province.

What is a Suicide Prevention Community of Practice?

A community of practice is a designated space for practitioners, researchers and representatives of community agencies to come together to share and learn from experiences in suicide prevention work. It is not a support group or counselling service.

Working to:

  • Create collaborative learning opportunities
  • Increase stakeholder/participant knowledge about suicide prevention initiatives across Alberta
  • Strengthen partnerships and connections between programs, agencies and staff working in suicide prevention

What is Involved in the Community of Practice?

Virtual gatherings are held four times a year via Zoom for the purpose of information-sharing, presentations, networking and discussions. These gatherings last 1.5 hours and are co-facilitated by Alberta Health Services’ Provincial Injury Prevention and Lethbridge Family Services.

How Do I Join the Community of Practice?

Membership includes representation from Alberta Health Services and a variety of community agencies and services in both rural and urban locations across Alberta. Members come with a range of experience such as community programming/development, delivery of prevention initiatives and direct client service provision to different populations.

If you work in suicide prevention and are eager to engage with others doing the same across Alberta, email injury.prevention@ahs.ca with the subject: CoP to be added to the Basecamp page for invitations and information on the quarterly virtual gatherings.
